Know Your Ohm’s Law For Safe Vaping
For some this might be an old topic, but for many it may be the first you have heard of this age old law in relation to vaping. Either way, we want to give you a basic guideline so you know how it relates to your sub-ohm device and why it is essential vaper knowledge. It is not as daunting as it may seem based on the fact that there are equations and math involved. There are vape safety calculators online and even smart sub-ohm devices that will adjust the mod to the atomizer coils for you to ensure your safety. But you know, knowledge is power and when you can apply it to your everyday life, you will always be ahead of the game.
What Is Ohm’s Law?
Ohm’s Law states that, “...the voltage difference between two points, the electric current flowing between them, and the resistance of the path of the current. Mathematically, the law states that V=IR, where V is the voltage difference, I is the current in amperes and R is the resistance in ohms. For a given voltage, higher resistance entails lower current flow.” (The American Heritage Science Dictionary, 2011.)
What Ohm’s Law illustrates is cause and effect of your vape technology in relation to your coils, the current passing through them and how much power is needed from the batteries. Or in other words, the direct uses or limits of what you vape with or how you would like to vape and how to stay safe doing it.
Ohm’s Law Triangle
There are three main elements in an electrical circuit, such as your vaping device, represented in this triangle. V represents voltage, I stands for current, and R is for resistance.The triangle gives a visualization for the equations. In essence, the law simply put is: I = V/R, but can be rewritten as: V = I/R or as R = V/I, depending what you results you are looking for.
Think of it like this, voltage is your batteries power potential, current is the strength of the electric flow drawn upon by your coil and resistance measures the difficulty of the passing electrical current.
For instance, a good example is the idea of water flowing through a hose. The water pressure pushing the water through is the voltage, the amount of water running through a pipe is the current and the size of the hose is the resistance.
If the size of the pipe (resistance) is increased, but the water pressure (voltage) is the same, the amount of water running (current) through the pipe will decrease. If the pipe size (resistance) remains the same, but the water pressure increases (voltage), water flow (current) increases through the pipe.
As long as you know the numbers to input into the equations, finding current, wattage or resistance will not be tough. You will be able to understand the current your coil is drawing, whether or not you could lower resistance and by how much your current and power will increase if you do so.
Some Things To Remember
A fully charged battery is 4.2v and dual batteries equate to 8.4v.
Always know your batteries resistance level ratings. Overheating will cause an explosion.
Always purchase quality batteries.
Atomizers are sold with already set resistance ratings.
Understanding the way your device performs will have an impact on how you should choose coil wires.
Coil wire gauge and mass will determine ramp up time and battery usage.
More coils will provide larger surface space for heating vape juice. Resistance is divided between coils, so the more coils you add to your build, the lower your resistance will go.
